Timber frame specialist Cygnum has launched a revolutionary closed panel timber frame system that combines the company’s timber engineering solutions with a new capacity for creating high performance recycled insulation. Together the system offers one of the most sustainable closed panel timber frame solutions on the market.

Timber frame specialist, Cygnum, has commenced delivery of a £5.1 million school building – designed and built to the ultra-low energy principles of Passivhaus construction. The new Oak Meadow Primary School building is part of Wolverhampton City Council’s £16.6 million Primary Capital Programme, set to transform the region’s educational facilities for primary age pupils.

It was an issue that united most of the companies we talked to - clients and main contractors need to make competing
for work less of a nightmare. Many thought the problem had got worse in the past couple of years - either because the perpetrators were shorthanded and trying to pass on work, or because less experienced people were involved. As Nick Baster says,

Designed by TSH Architects, Astrop Lane in Littlemore is a new development of 21 houses built by Vanderbilt Homes for Oxfordshire-based social landlord, Soha Housing. With sustainability, speed of build and efficient delivery of the scheme all major considerations, timber frame construction was chosen. To provide the timber frames for the new homes, Vanderbilt Homes turned to Cygnum Timber Frame.

For the creation of a series of ultra modern apartment pavilions, designed to blend with a mix of carefully restored and listed college buildings, the choice of materials was of paramount importance. Cygnum are delighted to announce the appointment of Jonathan Stone, as Commercial Manager – Engineered Timber Structures, to head up the companies move into this new sector.  Jonathan has been involved in and responsible for delivering some of the most exciting, innovative and largest engineered timber structures in the UK.  As well as recent high profile key-note Architectural projects, such as the highly acclaimed Serpentine Gallery Pavilion designed by Alvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura with Cecil Balmond of Arup, he has been instrumental in convincing many large clients, such as Tesco, main contractors, developers and Architects of the environmental benefits, cost and programme savings to be gained by building structures using engineered timber.  A structural engineer by profession, he has become regarded as one of the country’s leading authorities in engineered & specialist timber construction.

Cygnum are delighted to announce the appointment of Kerry Milhailovich, as Business Development Manager.  Kerry has joined the business to develop new trading relationships in the midlands, south west and north west regions together with adding  his experience gained in timber engineered products in both technical and sales positions with companies such as Benfield ATT & Oakworth.

New summer 2010 Cygnum will introduce to their website Technical Corner - A sliding scale database of external cross wall details in the form of 2D drawing & 3D modelling.  This library of wall details will start from 0.20W/m2k and slide down to 0.10W/m2.

This will provide our clients with real answers in relation to specification of external wall details, i.e. external wall stud size, cavity size, type of breather membrane & VCL, type of insulation & platerboard make-up.  The Industry order placers are still finding their feet in relation to a better understanding of achieving high levels of The Code for Sustainable Homes.

It's no surprise that the most popular buildings in Channel 4's 'Grand Designs' series were timber frame homes.
